History & Redevelopment
Originally constructed in 1939, Chalmers Court was one of the earliest public housing developments in the country. The property’s name mirrors Chalmers Avenue, which runs north to south within the community. The neighborhood, once known as Riverside and before that Chalmers Farm, was annexed by the City of Austin in 1886.
80 years later, the Austin Housing Authority began the redevelopment and modernization of the community. This was part of HUD’s Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) program. With RAD, the Austin Housing Authority was able to move away from traditional public housing and create more affordable housing options for the city’s low-income families.
Today, three apartment communities comprise Pathways at Chalmers Court—East, South, and West.
