How the Housing Choice Voucher program works

The Housing Choice Voucher program, also known as Section 8, helps people with lower incomes pay for a place to live by covering part of their rent.

With a Housing Choice Voucher, families can choose where they live. The voucher acts like a coupon for rent at an apartment, house, or townhome with a private landlord. Vouchers follow the family and can be transferred to other cities with a Public Housing Authority.

The tenant pays their portion of the rent directly to the landlord, and the Austin Housing Authority pays the remaining subsidy so the landlord receives the full contract rent.
