How to request a move (relocation)

If you receive a Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) through the Austin Housing Authority (AHA) and would like to move while continuing to receive rental assistance, follow the steps below.

1. Verify Your Eligibility

Before requesting a move, you must be in good standing with your landlord. This generally means you have no lease violations or unpaid rent and have lived in your current unit for at least one year, unless otherwise approved by AHA.

2. Provide Written Notice

Give your current landlord a written 30-day notice of your intent to move. Be sure to provide a copy of your notice to the Austin Housing Authority.

3. Request Your Moving Packet

Contact your assigned Housing Specialist or Portability Counselor to request your moving packet and Request for Tenancy Approval (RFTA) paperwork.

4. Find a New Home

Search for a rental unit that accepts Housing Choice Vouchers. Your voucher will include a limited search period, typically up to 120 days, to locate an eligible unit.

5. Moving Outside the AHA Service Area

If you plan to move outside the Austin Housing Authority’s jurisdiction, let your Housing Specialist know. They will begin the portability process with your new housing authority.
