Freedom, History, and Home: AHA Celebrates Juneteenth with the Rosewood Community

On June 19, 2026, Austin Housing Authority staff and residents joined East Austin’s Juneteenth celebration at one of the most meaningful corners in Austin history — the intersection of Rosewood Avenue and Chacón Street.

here are intersections that are just crossroads. And then there are intersections that mean something.

The corner of Rosewood Avenue and Chacón Street in East Austin is the second kind. On June 19, 2026 — Juneteenth — that corner came alive with music, dancing, laughter, and the deep, joyful weight of a community honoring its history. Austin Housing Authority staff and residents were proud to be right there in the middle of it.

As Austin’s beloved Juneteenth parade made its way through the Rosewood neighborhood, AHA staff lined the route, handing out water bottles and fans to parade-goers marching in the summer heat. There was candy for the kids, music filling every corner of the air, and all around — the kind of celebration that does not just mark a date on a calendar, but truly honors what that date means.

Juneteenth in Austin is not just a holiday. In the Rosewood neighborhood, it is a homecoming.

A Parade Route Through History

The parade route carried special meaning this year, passing directly in front of Pathways at Rosewood Courts — the historic East Austin community that is now in the final stretch of a transformational redevelopment and preparing to welcome residents home.

Rosewood Courts was first opened in 1939, originally designated as housing for Black families during an era of segregation in Austin. For more than 80 years, it has stood as a cornerstone of the Rosewood neighborhood — a community that has held onto its identity, its pride, and its traditions through decades of change in the city around it.

To watch the Juneteenth parade pass before those gates in 2026 — with a new Rosewood rising just behind them — felt like exactly what it was: history honoring history.

What’s Coming to Rosewood Courts

The new Pathways at Rosewood Courts is very close to reopening, and it will be the most significant transformation in the property’s eight-decade history.

The redevelopment doubles the number of affordable housing units available to families, while preserving eight of the community’s original historic bungalows. Those bungalows will be meticulously restored to their original architectural design on the outside — honoring the craftsmanship and character of the 1939 structures — while being fully modernized on the inside with central air conditioning, beautiful contemporary appliances, and free high-speed internet.

Alongside the restored bungalows, brand-new modern apartments will be built on the property, offering more families access to high-quality affordable housing in one of Austin’s most vibrant neighborhoods.

And just steps away, on Poquito Street, Prospect Heights is already making history of its own: twelve townhome-style homes, built in partnership with Austin Habitat for Humanity, have been sold to first-time homebuyers — a first-of-its-kind affordable homeownership opportunity through AHA, right here in East Austin.

The Corner of Rosewood and Chacón: A Place Worth Celebrating

The significance of this corner runs even deeper than the redevelopment.

The land at Rosewood Avenue and Chacón Street sits near one of Austin’s original Emancipation Park locations — a gathering place where Austin’s Black community came together to celebrate Juneteenth in the city’s earliest years, long before the holiday was officially recognized by the nation. The history of that ground is inseparable from the celebration that filled these streets on June 19th.

When the new Rosewood Courts opens, that legacy will be honored in a permanent way. A new celebration park at the corner of Rosewood and Chacón will serve as a living commemoration of Austin’s Juneteenth history — a place where residents and neighbors can gather, reflect, and carry that tradition forward.

The land at Rosewood and Chacón has always been a place of gathering, of joy, and of freedom. The new park will ensure it stays that way.

Coming Soon: The WOW Center

One more piece of the Rosewood future is just around the corner — and it is one that the whole community will be able to share.

Coming soon to the corner of Rosewood Avenue and Chacón Street is the What Once Was (WOW) Center — a community space managed in partnership with E4 Youth, one of Austin’s most respected youth-serving organizations. The WOW Center will serve as a historical and cultural hub, open to AHA residents and the broader East Austin community alike, celebrating and preserving the rich legacy of the Rosewood neighborhood and its people.

From the original Emancipation Park gatherings to today’s Juneteenth parade passing its gates — the story of Rosewood has always been worth telling. The WOW Center will make sure it is never forgotten.

Thank You, East Austin

To everyone who came out to celebrate on June 19th — the marchers, the musicians, the families lining the route, the neighbors who have kept this tradition alive for generations — thank you. The Austin Housing Authority is honored to be a part of this community, and even more honored to be helping build its next chapter.

The new Rosewood Courts is coming soon. And when those doors open, it will be a celebration worthy of this corner — and everything it represents.
