Property Rendering of Pathways at Santa Rita Courts

Originally opened in 1939 as the first public housing development built under the U.S. Housing Act of 1937, Santa Rita Courts holds a proud place in Austin history. Located in East Austin, it originally served Hispanic families during an era of segregation.

Today, Santa Rita is being thoughtfully redeveloped — preserving 11 of the original historic bungalows with fully modernized interiors, while adding beautiful new apartments that complement the evolving East Austin landscape. All homes will feature modern appliances, central air conditioning, and high-speed internet. A newly constructed on-site preschool will offer free childcare through Austin ISD, supporting working families on their path to self-sufficiency.

Santa Rita Courts is expected to reopen by 2029 and will be managed by Carleton Living.
